Medical Case Management (CM) and Musculoskeletal Injury (MSI) Prevention Program for the BC Ambulance Service

Purpose:
  • Prompt and appropriate intervention at the early stages of injury or illness
  • Health promotion and education
  • Safe, timely and sustained return to work
  • Prevent MSIs and to reduce their negative impact
  • Assist employees with MSIs to remain at work or return to work as soon as safely possible
  • Gather information on causes of injury for the purpose of prevention
HEALTHSERV's Role:

Occupational Health Nurses (OHN) provide the case management and facilitate the program. This includes:
  • Direct contact with the employee
  • An OHN medical assessment
  • Liaison with the employee and healthcare providers, e.g. family physician, medical specialists, physio-therapists, the Employer, EFAP, WorkSafeBC, Great West Life, and the Union
  • Request for medical information or additional diagnostic testing as required
  • Liaison with local service providers (e.g., physiotherapists, kinesiologists, and dieticians) to develop appropriate rehabilitation programs
  • Development of a Medical Plan of Care for treatment and intervention
  • Facilitate, support, monitor, and evaluate the Plan of Care
  • Determination of fitness to work and identify limitations as appropriate.
Types of Programs
Programs are developed after a complete assessment, and may include:
  • Addictions and Mental Health Medical Management and Monitoring
  • Chronic Medical Condition Management
  • Rehabilitation for specific injury
  • Rehabilitation to improve strength and flexibility
  • Intervention for weight loss
  • Intervention to improve core strength and aerobic fitness
Who is Eligible?
Participation in the Program is voluntary

For general case management:
  • any employee who is ill or injured
  • May be self referred, or referred by Employer, Union, WorkSafeBC, or Peer
For MSI Program:
  • An employee at work who has experienced multiple MSIs
  • An employee who has just gone off work due to MSI
  • Referrals through MSI Program Coordinator, Shelley Franklin, 250-828-5859, Shelley.Franklin@gov.bc.ca
Confidentiality
  • Confidentiality of medical information is assured
  • Communication regarding medical condition with other health care providers, only with employee's written consent
